Expats are required to register in the local police station within 24 hours of arrival. When you get a new visa or move to a new place or travel back to china, you need to redo it.

If you are staying at a hotel or hostel, the staff there will automatically do it for you. If you ask, they will give you the form. Please make sure they stamp it with the hotel or hostel' seal.
If you are renting an apartment or staying with your friends, you need to go to the local police station yourself. Normally, you are required to take the following original documents:

Passport
You are required to submit copies to officer:

The copies of Passport first page, visa page, the page with stamp which you got it when you enter china.
The copy of the certificate of the property (ask it from your landlord).
The copy of ID card of landlord.
You are required to give some information:
The name of the company you working for in china.
The name and mobile phone number of Emergency Contact Person (People who can speak chinese).
The landline phone number of reception unit/Company in china.
Addition information:
You need to do registration for Residence permit after you get it. You are not required to redo the registration every time again after you enter china if you have a Residence permit., unless you extend your visa, change your living place, have a new residence permit. Please double check the local police station for more accurate information.
